Description

Samuel Poromaa's pictures take place in the border worlds of urbanity, in areas characterized by an ever-changing movement between activity and stillness, and move in inner regions rather than outer ones, in a no-man's land in the breach between wakefulness and dream. They are images that take shape in the gaps between moment and memory and sit like shutters between the everyday passing flow of impressions and the gaze's reducing attention to details of the materiality of places. The gaze in this sense consolidates the urban landscape as physical reality, but at the same time reduces it to a subjective experience and an inner happening, and it is this duality of perception that Poromaa explores in his images, in how they exemplify a state between mentality and physicality.

As a conceptual artist, he works in series where the traces left behind by human activity are a permanent theme, but at the same time does not seek to recreate places through photographic realism, as for him it is not about documenting or depicting the physical world with the aim of simulating reality, but more about reshaping it into pure observation, or about deconstructing physical space into slivers of observations that settle temporarily on the retina in a constant stream of updated sense data.

Samuel Poromaa born 1960 in Kiruna, Sweden, now living in Stockholm. Holds a Master Of Fine Art from his studies at The National College Of Art Craft And Design, where he studied painting at the department "Bild och Miljö" between 1984-89. Today his focus is photography.
